How to Fillet a Rainbow Trout Fish

Rotorua offers some of the best trout fishing in the North Island. In fact, you can fish for trout in Lake Rotorua – just metres from our park. If you’re lucky enough to catch a famous local trout, here’s a step-by-step guide for the perfect fillet!

  1. Wash the fish with water under the tap
  2. Cut the fish – you will need a sharp fillet knife. If you don’t have one, find the sharpest knife you have.
  3. Start to cut at the bottom hole located on the stomach by the tail. Cut all the way up to the gills.
  4. When the stomach is open you will see intestines. You will have to clean everything including the bones. When taking the bones out, you can use your hands to remove them, but make sure the intestines and the bones are removed.
  5. Remove the head. You will now look for the gills and placing your knife closest to the head and start cutting.
  6. When removing the tail, you will need to start cutting one inch above the tail.
  7. Double check for any bones or intestines.
  8. Start where you have cut the tail when you are ready to remove the skin, so when you slowly remove the skin all the way to the front where you have cut the head of the fish. It should peel nicely but you need to make sure that you peel everything or else you will be picking the skin off.

What Our Guests Are Saying

This place is magic! Fabulous for kids and families. Our unit was toasty warm on cold days and cool on the hot days. Kitchen was great for making our meals, and the shower had fantastic water pressure. A+++ And we loved the cute cat too!

If I could give it more stars I would. I highly recommend this accommodation for families. There is so much for the children to do. It was the most relaxing holiday I’ve had since having children because the children are entertained all day with a big playground, dinosaurs, games room, bikes, awesome swimming pool and spa etc. They had even set up a bouncy castle while we were there. It also felt very safe and the staff are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. We stayed in a family unit and it had everything we needed. Will definitely be back again.

We were in Rotorua for the National Secondary Schools Waka Ama Competition. Fantastic place to stay and budget friendly. Great range of accommodation and amenities. The heated pool and spa were very appreciated after a long day of competing. We will definitely be back next year.

This was a nice place to stay to visit Rotorua. I really enjoyed that it was located outside of the main area. It is also really close to the lake, which was fun to walk around for a few minutes after dinner. The kitchen was well stocked with everything that we needed for dinner. The only weird thing was a note that it had limited hot water but didn’t say how much it was limited. We did camping showers to conserve water, but may have been taking it a bit overboard? Still not sure, but it was a very nice stay.
